As I noted, this is raw research, not a finished product--results to come. One thing I'm finding is that looking closely at slices of data from Party Time leads in all kinds of directions...
Sen. Mike Crapo: He's been busy in 2009, with six fundraisers, including two on the day of the vote (April 30) -- breakfast at the Hay Adams Hotel a few blocks from the White House, and cocktails and dinner at Rosa Mexicano. The breakfast invited lists hosts, including Donald C. Auerbach, James R. Hart, Dean R. Sacket and Peter J. Gunas, who lobby for the Investment Company Institute, and Paul Schott Stevens, who's the ICI's president. ICI disclosed lobbying on the bill. Crapo's April 21st fundraiser, which lists three hosts, is interesting as well. All the names turn up in the Open Secrets lobbying database, while two turn up in the revolving door databases -- Will Hollier (legislative director and later chief of staff for Crapo), Niels Holch (a former chief of staff for Sen. Mitch McConnell), and his partner Markham Erickson. Both firms represent, among others, Native American tribes, and the invite lists Crapo's membership on the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and also noted that Sen. John Barrasso, ranking member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, would be in attendance. Crapo's next election is in 2010; he's raised $191,965 in the first quarter of 2009.
Sen. Jim DeMint: 17 fundraisers in 2009, including two in February labeled as Financial Services Industry meet and greet and a Financial Services breakfast. Like Crapo, DeMint is up for reelection in 2010; he's raised $698,812 in the first quarter of 2009.
Sen. Byron Dorgan: Two fundraisers in 2009 according to Party Time, one on March 12 hosted by the PAC of the lobbying firm Akin Gump Straus Hauer & Feld. Given the small number of fundraisers, I thought I must have been mistaken about Dorgan's status, but he is in fact up for reelection in 2010, and has raised $1,322,385 in the first quarter of 2009.
Sen. John Ensign: We have nothing in Party Time for Ensign (he does turn up as a guest at fundraisers for other members -- something else I should probably be checking for everyone). He's scheduled to face voters in 2012. He raised $79,376 in the first quarter of 2009.
Sen. Mike Enzi: Must be something about e's -- Enzi has no fundraisers in Party Time either, though he does turn up at a fundraiser for Barrasso and a golf tournament.
